Abstract
In an attempt to determine the efficacy of flubendazole against Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura infections, forty-three children aged 6-11 years, including 20 infected with A. lumbricoides, 31 with T. trichiura, and 8 with both worms, were given a single oral dose of 500mg flubendazole tablet.
The stools were first examined by, the formalin-ether sedimentation and the Stoll egg count technique was then applied to estimate the intensity of infections before treatment, and four weeks after treatment the stools were reexamined.
After flubendazole treatment, fecal ascaris eggs were completely eliminated in number with a 100% egg negative conversion rate. In the trichinosis children, there were remarkable reductions in the total egg count, 77.4% in egg negative conversion rate and 78.4% in egg reduction rate.
No significant adverse clinical reactions were noted Based on this study, flubendazole appears to be effective in the treatment of round worm and whip worm infections.
